Rustic land without heirs will be managed by professional managers

The last Council of Ministers of the former government approved the reform of rural property, which is considered essential for dealing with the risk of fire.

The inheritance deed must be made within 6 months. The deadline for accepting or rejecting inheritances, which was 10 years, is now 2 years. At the end of this period, if no heirs have been qualified, a professional manager will be appointed to manage the estate.

According to preliminary data released in September by the Working Group, there are more than 11.5 million rural properties in Portugal, 85% of which are concentrated in the North and Center.

Around 30% of these more than 11.5 million rural properties are inheritances that have not yet been shared out. In addition, around 23% of rural Portugal is made up of scrubland and uncultivated land and a significant part of this land has no known owner.
